For the attention of:
CEO, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal
Scott Stewart MP
Queensland Resources Minister
We, the employees of the Moranbah North coal mine, are writing to you to express our extreme concern about management of the mine and our safety underground.
Under the current senior leadership team including the Senior Management on site , we have experienced a major roof fall, a tragic fatality and most recently an underground combustion event resulting in evacuation of the mine.
We don’t believe we have been given full information about the combustion event and fear that the management team is downplaying its seriousness.
Adding to our concern is the way the evacuation was managed by the management team.
For example, contractors were left working underground after the permanent workforce was withdrawn. Then, the company attempted to get coal mineworkers back underground the day after the evacuation, without knowing what caused the event or what exactly occurred.
The workforce is still waiting to receive a full explanation.
We are very keen to return to work, but we want to do so with confidence that we will be safe. We are calling on Anglo American to provide all workers with a full and frank explanation of what has occurred and to hold the Moranbah North management team accountable for safety failures at the mine.
Please add your name to this letter, and the Union will present it to Tyler Mitchelson and Minister Scott Stewart.
