The Workpac v Skene decision was an important win in the Federal Court, finding that casual mineworkers in regular and continuous employment could claim leave entitlements as their work arrangements are effectively permanent. Employers and the Morrison Government are now trying to undermine the decision in court. More than ever, we need to change the rules to end the ‘permanent casual’ rort in mining.

The CFMEU will run a television advertisement highlighting the plight of almost 200 miners from the Oaky North mine in Central Queensland, who have been locked out by multinational mining giant and corporate tax cheat Glencore for over 150 days this year.

The ads will run 131 times on Prime and QLD 9 in Mackay, Townsville and Rockhampton over a two week period from this weekend.

The CFMEU Queensland District President Stephen Smyth said the union wanted the public to know that the workers will remain locked out this Christmas by Glencore.

Well over 1000 members attended a mass meeting at Singleton Showground to make a stand against mining giant and union buster Glencore. For decades the likes of Glencore have been pushing to weaken the union. The push to use casual contract labour drives down wages and conditions and is destructive to local jobs and the local economy.

This fight is important not only for today's miners but for the next generation. Let's take on Glencore to protect our jobs and our community.

The Hazelwood Power Station in regional Victoria will close at the end of March. A new scheme, developed between the CFMEU, Victorian Government and the energy companies will allow older workers at other power plants to retire early, creating the opportunity for a Just Transition.
